A microscope is usually the most expensive item in a school biology lab, so it pays to match the model to how it will be used.
Middle school
A monocular microscope with 4x, 10x and 40x objectives covers almost every practical at this level. LED illumination is more reliable than a mirror in classrooms without good natural light.
Senior secondary
Add a mechanical stage so students can move slides precisely, and consider a few binocular units for longer observation work.
College and research
Binocular or trinocular heads, 100x oil-immersion objectives and better optics become important. A trinocular head lets you attach a camera for teaching.
